10 Fun Things to Do at Home When You're Bored

As much as you want to whine about having nothing to do, there are plenty of fun things to do at home when you're bored.

We live an age where technology has given us an unlimited amount of things to do. Even with that though, we still get bored. Our generation has been trained to have very short attention spans, and we tire of things quickly. We want to move onto something else, but when thinking of things to do at home when you're bored, your mind can go blank. Maybe you can't go outside because it's cold, raining, or you just don't want to leave the house. That's okay, we're not here to judge. You're tired of being told to "organize" when you're bored, because you want to actually have some fun. Yeah, organizing will eat up some time, but that's still boring. Let's do something that's actually fun.

Cook something new.

I know, cooking can take a lot of effort. But you're bored, so that means you've got a lot of time on your hands. Why not try cooking something that you've been thinking about but haven't really gotten the time for? Well, now is that time. If you haven't done a big shopping trip recently though, you might not have everything you need for one specific recipe. That's okay, just use a site like MyFridgeFood, which can tell you what you can make from the stuff you already have. It's pretty fun marking down all the stuff you have and then finding out you can cook a great meal that you probably didn't even think of! Maybe you'll even find something quick and easy to make in your crock pot, if you have one of those.

Do something artsy.

You don't need to be an artist to do something artsy when you're bored. If you can draw or paint, definitely go for that. Find inspiration in your boredom. Channel it onto the canvas! If you're not too artistically inclined, you can still do a paint-by-numbers page or color in one of those adult coloring books your mom got you for Christmas that you forgot you had. It's one of those things to do at home when you're bored that will pass the time so quickly, you won't even notice you're not bored anymore.

Read a book.

Maybe this isn't "fun" for everyone, but I like to think it's fun. I love reading, but since my job requires a lot of reading, I tend to get burnt out and forget the giant stack of unread books on my shelf. But when I'm bored, I always forget that they are waiting for me. Don't let this happen to you! Are you one of the few people, like me, that never read the Harry Potter books and your friends won't stop begging you just "just read it already"? There's your solution to two problems: you're not bored anymore and your friends stop annoying you. Win-win!

Take a nap.

Sleep is my favorite thing in the world. Maybe you've had a really rough week at work, and now you finally have a moment to yourself, and you're bored. Just nap, dude! You'll feel better afterwards, time will have passed, and at least to me, it's one of the most fun things to do at home when you're bored. Maybe you'll have some cool dreams that you can write down in a dream diary after you wake up.

Write something.

Maybe we're not all going to write the great next American novel, but writing something can not only pass time, but it's a good mind exercise. Maybe there's been this story you've created in your mind with fun characters, an interesting plot, and fantastical setting, but it's still in your mind. Write the first chapter! Or the fifth one, we don't have to go in order here. Or, if you're really cool, you've wanted to write something for this cool site, Vocal, and you've got a draft started but have yet to submit. Finish that baby and get it published! Writing your first online piece can be scary, but it's liberating when you get over that fear of rejection.

Go onto Wikipedia and play 6 degrees of separation.

This is probably one of the least productive things to do at home when you're bored, but still fun nonetheless. Pick a thing (seriously, anything you can think of), and then go to Wikipedia and hit "random article." Now get to your thing by only clicking links on Wikipedia. If you don't get there in 6 clicks, you lose. Bonus points if you get there in less than 6 clicks. And if you hit "random article" and get your exact thing, well, congrats, you win at life.

Learn something.

If you've been out of school for a while, you probably haven't learned anything new in a while. Sure, you "learn something new every day," but in reality, did you? What, you learned that your coworker's birthday was today because of Facebook? That doesn't count. Seriously research a topic that piques your interest. Is there something trending on Twitter that you just don't get? Do some research on it! Then you'll be hip and trendy with the kids. Just don't ever say that you're hip and trendy with the kids. You won't be anymore.

Treat yourself to a bubble bath.

Self care is super important, and if you're looking for things to do at home when you're bored, bubble baths are an excellent way to treat yourself and pass the time. Seriously, when was the last time you had one? You deserve it. Take a glass of wine with you, light some incense, put on some calming music, and you've got an evening of pampering ahead of you. Beforehand, if you're really bored but also ambitious, you could try your hand at DIY bath bombs

Have a dance party!

Sometimes the only reason we're bored is because we have a lot of energy and don't know what to do with it. You could do an at-home workout, but I personally don't think those are actually fun. Blasting your favorite tune and just letting your body loose, though? Now that's fun! This will burn some of that spare energy (and calories), and depending on how long your dance for, it could eat up a good chunk of time.

Make a vision board.

If you want one of the things to do at home when you're bored to actually be productive and helpful for future you, this is it. Vision boards are actually really fun to make too, since you get to cut out a bunch of stuff and design your board. It's like arts and crafts hour all over again, but for adults! Once you're all done, you can hang up the vision board somewhere you'll see it every day. Then, even when you're bored in the future, you can just take a look at the vision board and find something to work towards. Or just take another bubble bath, that will do just fine.
